EMAIL #188 - 02ND OCTOBER 2022 - "THE POWER OF BEING YOURSELF"

The Power of Being Yourself.

Faking it is no fun – being yourself is fun.

Being yourself, being individual is a superpower.

Everyone has a unique written signature and a unique DNA signature. No one will ever have your exact physiology or genetics. No one else will ever be able to do what you do and how you do it.

A geneticist once calculated the odds of you being who you are as 0ne in 14 billion, you are that special!

“When we are ourselves, we have value. When we are like everyone else, we are replaceable, we have little value.” Ryan Holiday

“Fake it until you make it” is B.S.

If you act fake and try to be like someone else the best outcome you can expect is “normal or average”. Ryan Holiday describes this as “you’re not playing to win; you’re playing to lose.” Faking it is a total waste of your uniqueness.

If I run a building company that does the same thing in the same way as dozens of other builders, my chances of success and longevity are very slim. The best way to stack the odds of success in my favour is to be a builder that is truly unique and do things differently to every other building company.

“Competition is for losers. You can always win if you only enter a competition where winning is up to you.” Peter Thiel

Back in 2011 Maryanne and I were ready to do another personal development. We had already done a series of successful townhouse developments and the logical next step was to do another “safe development”. But something inside both of us needed to do something different, something special, something unique.

After several months of searching for the right development opportunity, Maryanne found a small commercial property in St Kilda, sandwiched between two apartment buildings and backing onto a busy highway, the “missing tooth”. My initial reaction was “hell no!” But Maryanne had a vision and dug her heals in, so we purchased the property.

It then took 4 years to realise the vision.

None of the process was easy but it was extremely rewarding in so many ways. My family had the privilege of living in a truly unique house for 6 years that we were all immensely proud of. The project won numerous architecture and building awards, was published in a slew of magazines and books and gave my building company a huge amount of publicity.

Last year we made the difficult decision to sell this house and we received the financial windfall that only a unique property can deliver. That is the power of backing yourself and being true to yourself.

Thanks for reading,

Stay safe and celebrate your uniqueness.

David
