EMAIL #61 - 9th, March, 2020 - MY CENTRAL PHILOSOPHY ABOUT BUILDING

Hi Team,

This week's email is a bit different from normal. For the first time I have really struggled to write this email. Over the last two days I have started writing two other emails, but the topics and content just didn't feel right. So after a long walk along the beach and a review of my personal journal, I came across some homework from a business coaching session from a year ago that I have been meaning to share with the DDB Team. The homework task was to come up with "my central philosophy about building". David Guest explained it as "your personal 10 commandments for building" or after being a builder for 33 years what are your core beliefs about running a building company?

So, here is My Central Philosophy About Building. (Conveniently I have come up with ten!)

  1. Building or renovating a home should be enjoyable for everyone involved. (For the clients it should be one of the most rewarding experiences of their lives.)
  2. Building or renovating a home can change a family’s life. (Done properly it can greatly enhance their daily enjoyment and can significantly improve their financial security.)
  3. A building company is only as good as it's last job and its reputation. (Pretty much all of our jobs come from direct referrals from previous clients.)
  4. Having a strong brand and widespread brand awareness is vital to the stability and the growth of the business.
  5. All our clients have a level of fear and in trepidation about building. (Building or renovating a home is a big decision involving a lot of money and the building process can often go off the rails.)
  6. Educating our current and future clients is vital to overcoming their fears and gaining their trust"Once we gain our clients trust everything becomes easy." (Having lots of easy to access, up to date, relevant content such as FAQ's, Blogs, E-Books & Newsletters.)
  7. The culture of DDB will determine it's success. (Our culture is defined by the behaviour and beliefs of every DDB Team Member.)
  8. Everything we do must be consistent with our core values. (Integrity, Communication, Kaisan, Transparency, Pride.)
  9. Everyone’s primary job role is to make someone else’s job easier. (Especially sub-contractors).
  10. If we stop evolving and innovating, we die.

We are having a DDB Team Meeting this Friday 15th March at 12.00, at which we will discuss my central philosophy in more detail.

Thanks for reading,
David.
