EMAIL #52 - 9th, DECEMBER, 2019 - THE DARK SIDE OF EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE
Hi Team,
(Two weeks to Christmas).
This week I am going to briefly discuss a pretty heavy topic that is widely misunderstood in our society, narcissism.
The definition of a narcissist is a person who has an excessive interest in and admiration of themselves and a lack of empathy for others. Narcissists think the world revolves around them. So, to a large degree, narcissism is the enemy of emotional intelligence.
"Arguing with a narcissist is like being arrested, everything you say can and will be used against you", Unknown.
Narcissism is a personality trait or spectrum and most people are on this spectrum to some degree. A certain amount of self-centred ness or ego is healthy and desirable because it contributes to your confidence and ambition. However too much self-admiration and self-confidence is detrimental and will adversely affect your relationships and your career. The most severe form of narcissism is a condition called NPD, (narcissistic personality disorder) which is a serious psychological illness that is extremely self-destructive and should be treated by a trained psychologist or psychiatrist.
Unfortunately the world we now live and work in is fuelling a rise in self-centred behaviour. Our lives are played out and broadcast through social media to varying degrees and all the popular platforms (Instagram, Facebook Twitter etc) are designed around self-promotion and comparing yourself to others. The affect that social media is having on our behaviour and personality is called "selfie syndrome" and it is causing shifts and changes in all of our relationships, our culture and our careers.
"May your life someday be as awesome as you pretend it is on Instagram", Pinterest.
For me it's all about self-awareness and knowing and understanding the affect your behaviour and personality has on other people.
Thanks for reading and be nice to each other,
David.
PS: Don't forget the last DDB Team Meeting for 2019 this Friday (Xmas theme, so bring your Santa hat and mince tarts).
