EMAIL #38 - 29th, JULY, 2019 - FINDING YOUR WHY
Hi Team,
Thank you all for participating in the biggest DDB Team Meeting to date last Friday. I thoroughly enjoy these monthly gatherings and gain valuable feedback and insight by having the whole team around a table for an hour or so; although it is clear that we now need a bigger table!
A couple of the tasks or ideas from the team meeting that I would like you all to think about and action are;
-
I strongly encourage you to use your personal journal as often as possible. It may feel strange and pointless at first, but the more you use it the more significant and meaningful it will become. We are all on a journey of self improvement, and your personal journal will be valuable to show you how far you have come.
-
I would love your ideas about the setting or context for a "DDB Team Photo." (Be creative and don't hold back!)
Wanting to learn and find out more about a particular topic or profession is the starting point for self improvement. This desire to know more invariably comes from curiosity and being drawn towards a task or activity. If cultivated and allowed to grow, this natural "pull" towards something ultimately grows into a passion. Then, if you nurture and understand your passion it will lead you to your purpose.
"The two most important days in your life are the day you are born and the day you find out why", Mark Twain.
There is a huge difference between doing work that you are passionate about and doing work that bores you or you couldn't care less about. If you really care about your work and you are naturally interested in what you are doing you will actively pursue new opportunities and want to learn more about every aspect of your job. So being passionate about your work almost guarantees your professional success.
Three questions you can ask yourself to help find your passion include;
-
What do you love to do?
-
Who do you do it for?
-
What difference does it make?
These are three very simple questions, but with some deep thinking and soul searching the answers can be personally very insightful and significant and could help to kick start you self improvement journey?
In today's fast pace world it is very easy to get caught up in the constant "doing" without really knowing why. But this can only be sustained for so long and in the long term what matters most is finding and understanding your "true purpose".
"The meaning of life is to find your gift. The purpose of life is to give it away", Pablo Picasso.
Finding your passion is a great start, but nurturing it and maintaining it long term year after year is a different matter. This is what really tests your resolve and your resourcefulness. Here are a few tips for how to stay passionate about your work for the long term.
-
Understand your impact. Think about how your work positively impacts other people?
-
Don't be afraid to take risks. If you wait until you feel ready to do something, it will often be too late.
-
Keep passionate company. Negative people can drag you down. Passion attracts passion, it's contagious.
-
Never stop learning.
-
Integrity is everything. If you commit to doing something always follow through.
-
Relinquish perfectionism. Pursuing perfection is different to suffering for it.
