Hi Team,

To round out my current email series about Teamwork, I would like to explore what makes one team more successful than the next and what are the main contributors to a team's level of performance?

For a business to succeed in todays fast paced and hyper competitive world it must have a significant "competitive advantage". I firmly believe that the best competitive advantage a business can have is "great teamwork". This is the central message in a recent book called, "Five Dysfunctions of a Team" by Patrick Lencioni and is summed up in the following quote.

"Not Finance. Not Strategy. Not Technology. It is teamwork that remains the ultimate competitive advantage; both because it is so powerful and so rare" , Patrick Lencioni.

The ultimate success of a team usually comes down to how well the team members consistently work together. So teams are built on relationships and believing in a shared vision. It is the responsibility of the coach or the manager to establish the teams culture and vision by painting a picture that all team members can connect to and to define what behaviors are required to achieve the vision.

"Every high performing team believes it exists for a compelling reason and that the world will be better for what it does. It's purpose is not the task or work it does but the benefit it delivers",  Linda Hill.

The important message regarding long term performance for any team is to focus on the journey and not on the result.
Another vital contributor to DDB's team performance is our desire for "constant improvement" by developing better systems and by improving efficiency through the use of better technology such as Buildertrend.
