EMAIL #34 - 1ST, JULY, 2019 - What makes a team successful?

Hi Team,

The DDB Team is undergoing several changes at present, so to bring everyone up to speed, here is a quick summary.

  • Lachlan started work last week as a new part time labourer (friend of Will's).
  • David started work last week as a new contract carpenter at Omar St to help with the lock up.
  • Unfortunately Luke will be leaving DDB in three weeks and Josh Marshall will be joining DDB as the new Project Manager.

This week I would like to examine Team Dynamics and what makes a team successful.

"The success of a team. Coming together is a beginning, keeping together is progress, working together is success",  Henry Ford.

For a team to succeed it must have a clearly defined structure (job roles + job descriptions), so that every team member knows there roll and exactly where they fit in. There must also be a leadership or management structure (Construction manager + Project manager) as well as a coach or mentor (General manager + Business Coach).  Finally, there must be a clear set of rules for playing the game or doing the work, (DDB's core values + Job Performance Measures) = see a copy attached.

The size and composition of a team can also greatly influences the effectiveness of the team.

"If you can't feed a team with two pizzas, it's too large",  Jeff Bezos.

Research in numerous fields has shown that the ideal size of a team is between 7 & 14 people, so DDB is just reaching it's ideal size! The last vital ingredient for a high performing team is "drive and motivation". What motivates people is a very meaty topic and this is something I am particularly fascinated by. So, I would like to devote a couple of future weekly emails to explore and dissect motivation in detail.

"People enjoying their work and wanting to be there is much more valuable than traditional measures of productivity",  Unknown.

To sum up what makes a team successful, here are the 9 Qualities of A Great Team.

  1. They communicate well.
  2. They are honest with each other.
  3. They are well organised.
  4. They have clearly defined roles.
  5. They have good leadership.
  6. They support each other.
  7. They share a common goal.
  8. They have fun working together.
  9. They share accountability.
