EMAIL #05 - 14th, JULY, 2018 - To work smart
Hi Team,
I am back from my ski week and a little worse for wear. Last Monday I had a major crash skiing fast down a black run, (only my second visit to the medical center in over 50 years of skiing). I was extremely lucky to only come away with a torn rotator cuff muscle in my left shoulder and a slightly sore left knee; it could of been a hell of a lot worse.
According to Maryanne, who was watching from the bottom of the run, "it was a horrifying crash". For me it has been a very humbling experience and I am so glad to have come out of it in one piece. I now know my limits on the snow!
I read an article last week about work productivity, (yes still one of my main focuses at present) that was written by the author of a new book called "Great At Work". This article made a lot of sense and had some great advice for us all. This weeks quote comes from one of the opening lines from this book.
"To work smart - select a few activities and apply intense targeted effort. In other words, do less, then obsess"
Morten t. Hansen.
I love this advice!
The article went on to discuss the host of benefits of focussing your attention on a few specific targeted activities and how multitasking is a drain on your productivity. This is something I experience on a daily basis and is a way I feel I can make big improvements in my own productivity. One specific "productivity hack" in the article was to limit your daily "to do list" to no more than 5 items. This "to do list" is in addition to your normal daily job tasks and ideally should only be three items and never more than five. Also, you should always number and prioritize this list. We will discuss this more fully at the DDB Team Meeting this Friday, and I will definitely be reading this new book as soon as it is available!
Thanks for reading,
David.
